It looks completely ineffective for a real fight, because it is absolutely immobile, cannot extend to present a wider front without great disruption, and is completely unable to react to flanking.
#Mount and blade viking conquest factions mod
Originally posted by Goweigus:is there a mod that makes the shield wall more shield wally such as seen in The Last Kingdom? I was rather disappointed the first time i tried to form one in this gameI know of no mod that implements that three tiered shield wall. Great early on, but against lords with elite armies, I prefer faction troops who die significantly less frequently. Outlaws are easy to recruit, but inferior to high tier faction troops. But in general, the top Tier faction troops are better, if you can get them.

Mercenaries are a good source of troops and some are outstanding, and they are not all that expensive, when you consider the considerable costs of upgrading a faction peasant all the way to bodyguard. Note that Irish and Pictish cavalry can do anything javelin cavalry cam do, and survive melee much better. Thus, they often get killed off in droves, so if you want to use them, you probably want the cheapest, i.e. Javelin cavalry is useful, but needs to be micromanaged at times when you are probably better off micromanaging some more useful cohort. They would be great for charging the enemy in the back, but by the time you've maneuvered the enemy into a trap, your berserkers have gone mad with rage, attacked each other, and are either dead or exhausted. Your warrior companions can act as javelin cavalry, and you can give your specialists crossbows and classify them as archers.Īs for berserkers, I do not use them. Now it's Pict nobles.īut honestly, the most effective way to fight is to have your spearmen in one shield wall (anvil) and your sword and shield infantry in another (hammer) and sandwich the enemy in between. obsolete, they were nerfed and made higher tier, yes, at once. heavish cavalry, good for charging skirmishers and running down routers - Irish bodyguard bowmen, good for shooting a shield wall from the right flank - Norse warrior archers crossbowmen, good for sieges where the defenders are exposed - Pictish elite skirmisher sword and shield infantry, perfect for hitting the enemy in the rear or flank: Norse bodyguard

spears infantry, perfect for holding the enemy at bay in a shield wall: Saxon noble As for specific troop types, here is something I wrote years ago, but i think it still stands:

Saxon nobles for holding shield walls and Norse huscarls for flanking them.
